About the Artist

I'm Welma Williams, a colorist and an event professional by passion. I've had no formal schooling in arts and probably that has provided my art soul the much required freedom of expression! My first love is water colors though I do dabble in oil and other mediums. My art works reflect life and our journey through it. From Smiles, frowns, blank stares, tears to the still moon, melting skies to rebellious seas of our souls, my colors attempt to capture all these and more. From a young age my artworks were displayed in New Delhi art galleries and the biggest motivator was my art teacher in school who never let us use a pencil to sketch but straightaway experiment with colors and give shape to forms with brush strokes, I am indebted profoundly to my art teacher for instilling courage in us to face the canvas boldly with a brush to maneuver. I stopped painting for almost two decades as I focused on some family matters and bringing up my child, however my love to paint returned a couple of years ago, when my colleague Hana motivated me to put up my artworks at World Art Dubai, my art was selected and my first painting in Dubai got sold in 15minutes of show opening and from then on I got encouraged, as my art got noticed. If my work can elicit a glance or a precious smile, i would have achieved my goal! Thank you for your time and reading this through.

A big shoutout to my colleague

I love colors and telling my story through mixing them infinitely and in the end sometimes I become a part of the painting itself! My thoughts wander constantly and it’s hard to stay focused on a particular theme. I am moody and can paint endlessly for 6- 8 hours straight and finish a couple of paintings in one stretch and sometimes I do not touch the palette for days on end. So to answer your question, at this point I am inspired by faces and emotions. Most difficult to capture the grins, frowns and particular looks through just a brush paint and water, but I love it the most and have been moderately successful in catching these emotions on canvas.

Mostly instinctive, but yes sometimes emotions take precedence and then it’s reasoned. My close friend lost her mom and she posted favorite picture of her mom on face book, I saw it and immediately that evening I painted the same picture and gifted her, that’s how I connected with her pain. Instinctive yes, sometimes, I just take the color my brush reaches out to and simply dabble it on white canvas or paper and within a few minutes voila, I have something to share with everyone.

Yes art is my medium of expression, and helps me perceive the same object/space in different perspectives, all this can happen only through art! As I mentioned it’s mostly about the emotions, I get drawn towards expression through emotions and try to bring these to life on canvas so others can live that moment too. I have also seen that a same painting is perceived in so many different ways, and it truly fascinates me when it turns out that way, because then the outcomes are endless.

A sense of relief and a good night's sleep! Well, I do not want to sound pretentious, but I cant stop when I start a painting, it’s like eating a piece of cake, can you stop midway? I always finish the painting that I start, in my life, I have never left a incomplete painting for the next day. So yes, I am too fast with my paintings, the longest I took was 4 hours to paint a canvas, rest all finish in less than an hour or so! I cannot imagine leaving a painting incomplete…
